Just think, If it wasn’t for Tonto, there never would have been a “Lone Ranger”. And Johnny Depp is nothing like the Tonto of yesteryear.
Depp gives an extraordinarily eccentric performance as the masked man’s mentor in this over-the-top, satiric Western adventure.
Depp’s the perfect foil for stodgy Armie Hammer, whose about to start learning how to say. “Hi Yo Silver”. And oh yes, Tonto does address the masked man as Kemosabe.
With a production budget the size of the U.S. Treasury, “The Lone Ranger” hits the trail with the most spectacular train wrecks that ever spoofed the winning of the wild west.
“The Lone Ranger” would have invited less criticism by replacing Its PG-13 rating with the more appropriate R-rating.
Because some of the brutality comes as a shock. We’ll make allowances for graphic violence, but not at the risk of ambushing the family crowd.
I don’t have to spell it out, that “The Lone Ranger’s” most appreciative audience has a little grey in their hair. That “Long Ranger” of long ago reflected simpler times. This one polishes a harder edge with 3 stars. Johnny Depp amuses and troubles us as the Tonto for a new generation.
