Let me assure you, the summer movie season is much more than just escaping into the sheer fantasy of high flying super heroes.
You’ll also find strong drama for serious moviegoers. I’m talking about “What Maisie Knew”, the touching story of a little girl torn between her selfish parents’ bitter divorce. This film will tear at your heart, because instead of sensing love, Maisie only experiences their hate towards each other.
Unfit parents Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan are too absorbed with themselves to understand Masie’s fears. Moore doesn’t exactly give aging rock stars a good name as parental material.
We observe the couple’s ugliness through Maisie’s eyes as she grows wise beyond her years.
If her parents care only about themselves, why shouldn’t Maisie develop a survival instinct?
We get a sharp glimpse of the kind of person Maisie will grow up to be through no fault of her own.
For first rate movie going you should know “What Maisie Knew”. This is compelling cinema with a bonus of three stars.
Incidentally, newcomer Onata Aprile plays Maisie. She’s a talented child with a promising future.
