What would Judy Garland have thought of “Oz The Great And Powerful”? Not very much I’m afraid.
There were no wizards at work in this gorgeous looking eye candy.
The picture lacks the magic of Dorothy’s 1939 adventures in the land of Oz.
The gifted James Franco can do just so much as the Kansas con man adrift in the Emerald city.
You may want to kick your self for expecting too much. Sure, the visuals are lovely to look at, but where’s the charm that made “The Wizard of Oz” so memorable? It’s certainly not been captured in the dialogue.
Won’t the wizard be surprised to find there are two wicked witches, which does nothing to improve the story or expand the possibilities. The failings of this eye-catching, but lackluster version only proves, “The Wizard of Oz” was a once in a lifetime creation that doomed all future imitations.
It certainly occurred to me, that this picture is an imposter. “Oz the Great and Powerful” hardly qualifies for the keys to the emerald city with 2 stars.
And by the way, some of the scenes are much too scary for the very young.
