“End of Watch”October 6th, 2012 at 7:22 pm by Sy Becker under A Look at the Movies
1 hour 55 minutes
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick
If you demand realistic police drama, I mean the kind that’s grim and gritty, you’ll embrace “End of Watch”.
Peacekeepers Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena give high energy performances, just struggling to stay alive every day on the mean streets of Los Angeles. Gyllenhaal and Pena bond tightly out of necessity and mutual respect, not to mention watching each other’s backs.
The no nonsense atmosphere is a real benefit to the film’s credibility. Some of the places portrayed in the movie are downright scary. These cops come to realize they’re living too dangerously for their own good.
“End of Watch” also has a sweet side, their off-duty personal lives, which seem like a million miles away from their daily grind of putting their lives on the line. This is a very carefully crafted slice of life that all comes down to the relationship between these two men dependent on each other.
As long as you know, “End of Watch” is a very violent movie, but it’s their compassion that stays with you. “End of Watch” wins the Becker badge of approval with 3 stars. This is one police drama that delivers everything that it promises.
