“Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”April 7th, 2012 at 10:57 am by Sy Becker under A Look at the Movies
Just the title, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, is enough to make you chuckle. This amusing romantic political satire will truly tickle your funny bone.
With Mid-East tensions being what they are, you can imagine how badly the British need a positive story for a change. Such as an Arab ruler whose a Salmon fishing fanatic. The prime minister’s press secretary Kristin Scott-Thomas knows a good story when she seed one and Scott’s sure this is something her boss will like.
And what’s not to like? One of my favorite directors, Lasse Hallstrom, has created a sensitive story about the visionary sheik who charms the skeptical British bureaucrat, Ewan McGregor, around to his way of thinking, that fishing has a profound impact on the human spirit.
It’s not just salmon fishing but young love that flourishes in the Yemen. McGregor and Emily Blunt become the most unlikely soul mates. How their relationship grows makes for delightful moviemaking along with the sheik’s world view that one day when war will be at an end and everyone will go fishing instead. It’s an inspirational point of view that we’ll accept right now as wishful thinking.
Let’s go to the movies for the beguiling pleasures of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. It’s quite a catch with 4 stars.
Go enjoy this movie as much as I did.
