Hundreds of people in Franklin County are now looking for a new place to work out. The Leading Edge Fitness Center in Greenfield closed today. I first found out about this yesterday when I got an e-mail from a viewer telling me about this sudden closure. She said that she had paid for a full year’s membership, and is concerned that she won’t  get her money back.

I immediately called the gym, and the receptionist confirmed that it was the fitness center’s last day open. I asked her if gym members will be refunded the cash they spent on their memberships, and she told me that she would have the center’s manager call me back.

I called the center a few more times to speak with the manager, and was repeatedly told that she would return my call as soon as she was available. I didn’t hear back from her, so I called the fitness center again this morning, and was greeted with a voicemail that appeared to have been recorded last year. It said that the gym was closed due to bad weather conditions. That’s surprising because the only weather related hazard we’re are risk for today is spring fever.

This afternoon 22News went to the Leading Edge to get some answers, and we were greeted with a closed sign on the door. The sign listed local Attorney Gary Weiner as a customer contact. I called Weiner to ask him about membership reimbursements, and he told me that as the company’s court appointed reciever, he’s been ordered to take control of the company’s assets, find out how much they are worth, and sell them.

Once this is done, he said that the gym members who are owed money will be paid from the company’s assets, if there are enough assets to pay them. Attorney Weiner said that the members are owed $17,000.00 worth of dues. He told me he will soon be sending gym members e-mails with instructions on what they need to do to get their refunds.
