Sy Becker’s in love with The Iron Lady, England’s first woman Prime minister. Margaret Thatcher provides Meryl Streep with one of her finest roles, and Streep’s up to the challenge with yet another Oscar worthy performance. But The Iron Lady is much more than great acting: it’s the sensitive story of a complex woman driven by an overpowering ambition.

Much of The Iron Lady proceeds in flashback; the now senile Thatcher, through her selective memory, recaptures the highlights of her turbulent political and personal life and her struggles to be accepted into the good old boy club that comprised the British Parliament.

Streep’s surrounded by fine British character actors, including the Oscar-winning Jim Broadbent, who delivers his typically wonderful performance as Margaret Thatcher’s adoring but long-suffering husband, who rarely–if ever–has the last word.

What The Iron Lady offers is a fair-minded celebration of a controversial political figure, who’s brought to life through the magic of Meryl Streep’s dramatic gifts. Together, they add up to a glittering 3 stars.

The Iron Lady is a must-see movie for fans of serious cinema.
